In a quaint Padang restaurant, filled with people enjoying their lunch break, two bros put their friendship to the test when it turns out that there’s only a single plate of their favorite food left: The Rendang of Death

Rendang of Death was created with inspiration from the legendary animated short ‘Bar Fight’ made by the equally legendary animator Christy Karacas.

From the opening scene of Rendang of Death, there is something very pleasing about its visual flair. Although reminiscent of other animated content created for adults, there is an immediate energy to the film, which grips from the onset. As the calm dining experience quickly turns into utter chaos, the short employs a rapid pace to ensure the entertainment never stops. With the insanity constantly escalating, the filmmakers switch between the general view of the restaurant getting destroyed and the close-ups of the bloody fights, allowing us the briefest of moments to catch our breath. The scenes where fellow diners seem to be totally unaffected by the utter destruction happening all around them really takes the comedy to the next level and prevents the film from becoming too overwhelming or repetitive.

Shot over the course of three weeks in Portugal, this week’s Staff Pick Premiere comes from the illustrious Paul Bush, in the form of what feels like a blithe retrospective on all things bikes: the motorized kind.

What started as an idea from co-producer Abi Feijo came to life years later through an expansive collection of motorcycles at Jose Pereira’s Museu da Mota. Despite there being more than 5,000 bikes to choose from, Bush went with a fraction of them — all lightweights ranging in European origin, but mostly from Portugal.

To watch this film is to witness mastery at play. With over 40 years of experience, Bush employs his stop motion brilliance with such precision, the idea of “effort” seems a bit foreign. The radiators, throttles, headlights and engines, fuel tanks, exhaust pipes, and every nut and bolt needing a screw — these parts and pieces are the lifeblood of bikes around the world. Bush seemingly appreciates each of those unmistakable machines with every passing frame.

One would be remiss to not note the irony that this project presents. A motorcyclist, not especially different from any other, produces his bike from a garage and sets off on a ride. Though, one could argue that the motorcyclist set off on hundreds of rides, maybe thousands, on more bikes than some might ever see in their own lifetime. And all in under the time it takes one to order a melange from the local cafe. It’s all so impossibly believable, that’s the magic of Paul Bush.

In just three minutes, Toberg simultaneously pulls the viewer up through time and technology. We climb from sea level to rural farm life into the industrial revolution. We move from manual labor to robotic. From an era of hard work to pure consumerism. Truth becomes post-truth. Finally, reality turns fully abstracted, existing in a digital ecosphere of our own damned design. In a sense, this film feels unfinished. It just happens to end in the present, but one can imagine the sequence going on forever and ever, we’re just unsure if we’ll be around to see it.

In 2009, an unknown effects-laden sci-fi short, Panic Attack, grabbed the attention of Hollywood proving the internet had opened a new path for aspiring directors

That success spawned thousands of CG-savvy imitators. Most fell short, and the few that were bought up by Hollywood didn’t always have a happy ending (Pixels).

But amongst the noise, we saw Stephan Zlotescu’s True Skin and recognized it as a rare sci-fi film that not only demonstrated a mastery of effects, but wrapped it around a unique world and interesting story. Its rainbow-colored view of the future earned Stephan a million views and, more importantly, landed him a manager and a deal with Warner Bros. Now, Stephan has a new deal with Amazon and is just getting started.

At the end of 21st century, mankind were facing global resource depletion. Space Rovers were sent out to find potential inhabitable planets

Planet Unknown is a glorious little animated film created as a thesis film by 3D animator Shawn Wang. In the likes of some famous cinematic space robots, Shawn explored the idea of intelligent and comically relieving rovers studying foreign planets.

I had been working full time on Planet Unknown from July 2015 to June 2016. It was a passion project as well as my graduation thesis film at Communication University of China. This 11-month journey was very challenging, but it was a perfect learning opportunity as well.

The idea started back in 2014 when Interstellar was released. I was deeply impressed by the movie and was inspired by the two robots TARS and CASE. The idea of intellectual robots exploring space developed from there.

Other inspirations include Pixar movies like WALL-E and Toy Story, as well as CHAPPiE, NASA documentaries about Mars Rover Curiosity, and short films by individuals like Alex Roman’s The Third & The Seventh, Richard Mans’ Abiogenesis, Erik Wernquist’s Wanderers, Alf Lovvold’s Dawn of the Stuff, and so many more.

Echoic Audio, one of the UK’s leading music & sound design studios, joined this adventure with epic cinematic score and detailed sound design which catapulted the film to a new level that I had never imagined.

This project pushed me to do what I never thought I could do. However, it also keeps punching me in the face and shows me how limited my skills are. There are still tons of problems in the making that I can’t figure out even now.

Thanks to everyone for the support along the way. The new adventure begins…
