I Tested Free AI Video Generators for B-Roll and Social Hooks in 2026
So I did what a lot of editors are quietly doing now. I opened a pile of free AI video generators and tried to get usable filler out of them: a slow push across a desk, steam rising off coffee, city lights going soft behind glass. The kind of three-second shot you drop under a title card and nobody thinks about again.
I’m not a prompt engineer. I cut video. My questions were boring and practical, and I suspect they’re yours too.
What I actually judged
Watermark. A logo burned into the corner is a dealbreaker for client work. I won’t rebuild a shot around somebody’s badge.
Clip length. For B-roll and hooks, 3 to 6 seconds covers most of my needs. Anything past 10 is a bonus.
Aspect ratio. I deliver 9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 1:1 for some feeds, 16:9 for YouTube intros. If a tool only does landscape, I’m cropping and losing resolution.
Sign-up. This one sounds petty. It isn’t. Every account means another inbox full of upsells, another password, sometimes a card on file “just in case.” When I’m testing ten tools in an afternoon, friction adds up fast.
I scored each tool out of 10 on those four points combined, plus a gut feeling about whether I’d open it again next week.
The scores at a glance
1. Rewind.ai: 9 out of 10
It wasn’t.
If what you want is an ai video generator free no sign up, Rewind came closest in my test, with one honest caveat: most of the site works with no account and no email at all, but the video tool does ask for a free account. No credit card, though. I made one in under a minute and got 10K bonus tokens plus 5K tokens a day on top.
Clips run from 1 to 12 seconds. The 3-second ones are free once you have the account, which is exactly the length I want for hooks. Longer clips spend tokens. I picked 9:16 for Reels, switched to 1:1 for a carousel test, then 16:9 for a YouTube cold open. No cropping. No fighting with a canvas.
The part I didn’t expect to care about: the self-hosted models. Wan 2.2 and CogVideoX run on Rewind’s own A100 servers, so the prompt isn’t sent off to a third party. For one client under NDA that actually mattered. Most of my clips finished in under two minutes.
You can also animate an uploaded photo. I fed it a still of a product on a table and got a gentle dolly move that looked like a real slider shot. Not perfect, the reflection wobbled a bit, but fine at reel speed.
If you want premium models, Seedance, Kling and Hailuo are in there too, billed from your token balance. Downloads come out as MP4. No watermark. That alone put it at the top.
Why not a 10? Twelve seconds is the ceiling, so long establishing shots are out. And the free account step, small as it is, still exists.
2. Kling’s own app: 7 out of 10
But you’re inside their account system from the start, and in my experience the free side felt like a trial meant to push you up a tier. Queues were longer on busy evenings. Fine for one beautiful shot. Slow for twelve hooks.
3. Hailuo: 7 out of 10
Account required. Free usage felt capped in ways I had to keep checking. I’d use it again for a single tricky shot.
4. Luma Dream Machine: 6 out of 10
What slowed me down was the free tier, which in my experience got tight quickly, and I spent more time watching limits than editing. For a moodboard, I’d keep it bookmarked. For a deadline, less so.
5. Runway: 6 out of 10
As a free option for quick B-roll, though, it felt like the free plan was mainly there so you could see what you’d be paying for. Fair enough. Just not what this test was about.
6. Pika: 5 out of 10
For neutral B-roll it felt less predictable for me, and the free outputs I got weren’t something I’d hand over without thinking about branding. I’d retest it in a few months.
How I’d actually use these
Then it all gets graded to match the real footage, plus a light grain pass.
One more thing. AI B-roll doesn’t replace a shoot. It replaces the stock search you’d do at 1 a.m. when the client changes the brief. Treat it like that and you’ll be happy.
And keep your prompts in a text file. You will want them again.
