What is log footage in filmmaking?

Log footage is a recording format that captures a flat, low-contrast image to preserve more dynamic range, allowing for extensive color grading in post-production.

How does log footage differ from RAW?

Log footage is compressed but retains a wide dynamic range, whereas RAW footage stores unprocessed sensor data, offering the highest quality but requiring more storage and processing power.

Why do filmmakers shoot in log?

Filmmakers shoot in log to retain more detail in shadows and highlights, giving them greater flexibility during color grading and post-production.

What are the most popular log formats?

Common log formats include S-Log (Sony), C-Log (Canon), and D-Log (DJI), each optimized for different camera systems.

How do I properly expose log footage?

To expose log footage correctly, use waveform monitors, expose to the right (ETTR), and ensure highlights are not clipped while maintaining detail in shadows.
