Is Fusion free to use in DaVinci Resolve?

Yes. Fusion is included in both the free and paid versions of DaVinci Resolve. The Studio version adds some advanced features like certain tracking tools, optical flow, and the neural engine effects, but the core Fusion workflow covered in this guide, from Merges and masks to keyframe animation, is fully available in the free edition.

Can I use Fusion for motion graphics like After Effects?

Yes, with caveats. Fusion is a capable motion graphics environment and handles titles, lower thirds, animated logos, and compositing as well as or better than After Effects for many tasks. After Effects has a larger ecosystem of third-party plugins and presets, so if your workflow depends on specific AE plugins, Fusion will not fully replace them. For in-house motion graphics built from scratch, Fusion is a strong alternative.

What are nodes in Fusion?

Nodes are the building blocks of a Fusion composition. Each node is a box that performs one operation: generating an image, modifying an image, combining two images, or masking an area. Nodes connect to each other with lines that represent data flowing from one operation to the next, from left (sources) to right (final output).

How is Fusion different from the Color page in DaVinci Resolve?

Both pages use nodes, but they do different jobs. The Color page is purpose-built for grading: exposure, contrast, hue, saturation, and qualifiers. The Fusion page is purpose-built for compositing: combining multiple image sources, creating graphics, adding VFX, and animating over time. You can do some color work in Fusion and some compositing in Color, but each page is optimized for its core task.

Do I need a powerful computer to use Fusion?

Fusion is more demanding than the Edit page because it renders every frame through your node graph. A modern multi-core CPU, 16GB or more of RAM, and a capable GPU are recommended. Simple compositions with a few nodes run smoothly on modest hardware. Large compositions with many high-resolution MediaIns, heavy blurs, and particle systems benefit from strong GPUs.

How long does it take to learn Fusion?

A useful rule of thumb: a week of focused practice to be comfortable building lower thirds and basic VFX, a month to build confidently reusable templates, and six months to a year to feel fluent across tracking, keying, and complex node graphs. Most editors find the first three to five days steepest, then progress accelerates as the node mental model locks in.
