A Picture Is Worth 1,000 Words: Why Gaming Icons Need to Tell a Story
You can explain a game in a hundred different ways. Or you can show someone a picture and let them get the idea straight away.

Gaming has developed a sort of shorthand that most players recognise.

A treasure chest suggests prizes. A key suggests something is about to be unlocked. A crown suggests royalty. A lightning bolt suggests power. A pile of coins suggests, well, coins, and we could go on but you have probably got the idea by now.

Developers can play around with those ideas, but they still have a familiar visual language to work with.

Video games have health bars, maps, weapons and character icons. Mobile games use arrows, buttons and symbols that players quickly learn to recognise.

You see it and understand it.

That is one of the reasons graphics have become such a big part of modern gaming. Look at the best online casino games available and you will see all sorts of symbols doing the talking.

Fruit, playing cards, treasure, animals, characters, coins and all manner of strange little objects can tell you what a game is about before you have even pressed spin.

Games Have Their Own Visual Language

Think about walking up to a slot you have never seen before.

You probably are not going to read a full page about it first. You look at the reels. What are the symbols? What does the bonus icon look like? Is there a wild? Are there scatter symbols?

A decent set of graphics can answer some of those questions almost immediately.

A wild symbol needs to look different from an ordinary paying symbol. A scatter should be easy to recognise. A bonus symbol needs to catch your eye when it lands.

It is basically a visual language.

Making the Theme Obvious

Graphics also give developers a chance to establish the theme without spelling everything out.

Take an ancient Egyptian game. You might see pyramids, scarabs, pharaohs and hieroglyphics. A Western-themed game could have cowboy hats, horses, sheriff badges and old-style playing cards.

You get the idea before anyone has explained it.

That matters because online games have very little time to make an impression. There are thousands of titles out there, and players are constantly coming across games they have never tried before.

A good visual idea can tell you what you are looking at straight away.

The Graphics Have to Work Hard

That is why the little pictures on a gaming screen deserve more credit than they sometimes get.

They establish the theme. They separate features. They explain what is happening and help players find their way around the game.

All without using many words.

And that is the beauty of a good icon.

It can tell you exactly what you need to know before you have even stopped to think about it. In a world where games are fighting for attention, that can be pretty important.
